The First Batch in China! PetroChina Conducts CCUS-EGR Pilot Test in Volcanic Gas Reservoirs

On April 23, after half a year of research and development, the pilot test project of CCUS-EGR field test in volcanic gas reservoirs carried out by China National Petroleum Corporation in Changling Gas Field of Jilin Oilfield has progressed to the stage of scheme demonstration and parameter optimization.

 Focusing on the national "dual carbon" goal, the Group has formulated a "three-step" green action plan with clear goals. CCUS-EGR, as a strategic successor and green and low-carbon emerging industry, is an important way to achieve carbon peak in 2025, "near-zero" emissions in 2050 and the company's green transformation. PetroChina has vigorously promoted the industrialization and scientific research of CCUS. At present, CO2 oil recovery enhancement technology, namely CCUS-EOR, has accumulated rich practical experience, and gas reservoir enhancement recovery technology, CCUS-EGR, has just started. Related technologies at home and abroad are still in the theoretical research stage, and field practice is urgently needed to accelerate industrial development.

CCUS-EGR needs to rely on the integration of multiple disciplines such as indoor tests, comprehensive geological research, process matching, and economic evaluation to develop an overall solution for the entire process, and conduct block tests in an environment with a complete pipeline network, sufficient carbon sources, and superior oil and gas resources. Changling Gas Field is the "ballast stone" for the stable production and increase of natural gas in Jilin Oilfield. The main gas-bearing layer, Yingcheng Formation, is a typical representative of fractured bottom water volcanic rock gas reservoirs. It is a high-quality test area for CCUS-EGR to improve oil recovery, and is expected to achieve a major breakthrough in significantly improving oil recovery by injecting carbon dioxide.

The Daqingzijing Oilfield CCUS-EOR industrialization test area has been built in the Qingshankou Formation in the upper part of the Changling Gas Field. Relying on the joint advantages of the Changling Gas Field and the Daqingzijing Oilfield, Jilin Oilfield has carried out a pilot test of CCUS-EGR and CCUS-EOR synergistically improving recovery.

The surrounding area has two major gas sources: helium supply for high-carbon dioxide gas reservoirs and Jilin Petrochemical Pipeline. After carbon dioxide is injected into the lower Yingcheng Formation to improve the recovery rate of gas reservoirs, the produced gas is separated and then injected into the upper Daqingzi Oilfield to improve the recovery rate of crude oil. After the carbon dioxide gas reservoir is mined, the gas storage can be rebuilt to achieve carbon source recycling and zero emission. Taking advantage of the comprehensive favorable conditions of gas sources, spatial layout, ground pipelines, stations, etc., a three-dimensional demonstration base of helium efficiency + oil and gas synergistically improving recovery + gas storage is created. It is predicted that the recovery rate can be increased by more than 10% by gas injection to displace the Changling volcanic gas reservoir, which will help achieve stable production of Songnan natural gas and open up new ways for old gas fields to achieve high-level efficiency development.

 It is understood that China National Petroleum Corporation has established a research project team at the Jilin Oilfield Exploration and Development Research Institute. As a pilot project for the first domestic CCUS-EGR field test in volcanic gas reservoirs, the research results can fill the gap in this type of research. Through technological research and development and research, it can innovatively form a CCUS-EGR technology series for volcanic gas reservoirs, accumulate technical reserves, and fully promote green, low-carbon and efficient development.
