400 Meters! Namtso International Continental Scientific Drilling Project Sets A New Record For Lake Drilling in My Country
Jul 13, 2024
On July 12, the Nam Co International Continental Scientific Drilling Project, a key scientific expedition mission of the second Qinghai-Tibet scientific expedition, made significant progress. After more than a month of drilling lake bottom sediments, the expedition team has drilled seven boreholes. As of 18:35 on July 12, the seventh borehole had a depth of more than 400 meters, setting a record for the deepest lake drilling in my country.

Nam Co is located in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is the second largest lake in Tibet. The lake surface is 4,718 meters above sea level and the maximum water depth is about 100 meters. The sediments at the bottom of the lake are more than 700 meters thick, which will provide new scientific evidence for the study of climate and environmental changes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau over the past one million years, and play an important role in studying climate and environmental changes in the northern Tibetan lake area.
The Nam Co International Continental Scientific Drilling Project is jointly implemented by the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and scientists and drilling technicians from Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries, with 70 scientific expedition members.
