What Is The Difference Between A Wellhead And A Christmas Tree?
Aug 01, 2024
The wellhead is usually located above the ground or platform. It is the main interface between the drilling pipe and the surface equipment, and it is also the main channel for injecting drilling fluid and oil and gas. During drilling operations, the wellhead can prevent the formation material from collapsing and ensure that the drilling equipment can move up and down smoothly. It exists in the drilling, completion and production stages.

The Christmas tree is usually called a complex system of several pipes and valves, which are usually embedded deep inside the drilled oil well. When oil and gas reserves are discovered, the Christmas tree will connect the wellhead to the underground reservoir through pipes, and then send the oil and gas back to the surface processing equipment. The main function of the Christmas tree is to ensure that the oil and gas produced by drilling can be completely captured and transported, and it also needs to support some special valves and other accessories.
