Tubing Hanger

Aug 31, 2023

A tubing hanger is a key component of wellhead systems in the oil and gas industry. It's an integral part of the well completion process and is used to support and seal the production tubing in a well. The tubing hanger is typically located within the tubing head spool assembly, which is installed on top of the well casing.

Here are the main features and functions of a tubing hanger:

Support for Production Tubing: The primary purpose of a tubing hanger is to support the production tubing string, which carries hydrocarbons (oil and gas) from the reservoir to the surface. The tubing hanger is usually designed to hold the weight of the tubing string and any equipment attached to it.

Sealing Mechanism: The tubing hanger incorporates a sealing mechanism to prevent leaks between the annulus (the space between the production tubing and the well casing) and the tubing's interior. This helps ensure that produced fluids are properly contained and directed to the surface.

Attachment Point for Downhole Tools: Various downhole tools and devices, such as safety valves, chemical injection systems, and monitoring equipment, can be attached to the tubing hanger. This allows for control, monitoring, and maintenance of well operations.

Compatibility and Design Variations: Tubing hangers come in different designs to accommodate various well conditions, pressures, and operational requirements. Some designs feature hydraulic systems for remotely setting or retrieving the tubing hanger, which can be advantageous in deepwater or subsea applications.

Locking Mechanisms: Tubing hangers often include locking mechanisms to secure the hanger in place once it's properly positioned within the wellhead. This prevents unintentional movement of the hanger during production.

Material and Coating: Tubing hangers are typically made from durable materials that can withstand the harsh downhole environment, including exposure to high pressures, temperatures, and corrosive fluids. They may also be coated or treated to enhance their resistance to corrosion.

Removal and Replacement: Over the life of a well, there might be instances where the tubing hanger needs to be removed or replaced for maintenance, repair, or well interventions.
