Plug Catcher

Aug 12, 2023

In the oilfield industry, a plug catcher is a specialized piece of equipment designed to capture and contain debris, fragments, or plugs that are generated during drilling, completion, or intervention activities. It is positioned in the flow path within the wellbore or wellhead assembly.

The primary purpose of a plug catcher is to prevent unwanted materials, such as rock cuttings, metal fragments, or wellbore plugs, from entering the production tubing or downhole equipment. These materials can disrupt the normal flow of fluids, impede production, damage equipment, or even lead to safety hazards.

The plug catcher typically consists of a housing with an inlet that allows wellbore fluids and cuttings to flow through while capturing larger debris. Inside the housing, there are screens or filters that help trap the debris. The collected materials can then be removed and disposed of safely once the catcher is retrieved.

By using a plug catcher, the oilfield industry aims to maintain efficient and safe well operations, minimize equipment damage, and ensure the longevity of production equipment.
