Automated Drilling Rig For 12,000-meter Extremely Deep Wells Released As PetroChina's Only Major Scientific And Technological Achievement At The Annual Meeting Of Zhongguancun Forum
May 30, 2024

On April 29, a special conference on the major achievements of the annual meeting of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, and the Beijing Municipal People's Government, was held in the Changchun Hall of Zhongguancun in Beijing.

At the meeting, Jiang Tongwen, Chief Geologist and General Manager of Science and Technology Management Department of CNPC, as the publisher, released China's first automated drilling rig for extra-deep wells of 12,000 meters, which was independently developed by Gem Machinery. This is one of the 2024 major scientific and technological achievements (5 in total) released by China around facing the main battlefield of the economy.
The achievement realizes the world's first automated operation of 10,000-meter well drilling rig, and the equipment realizes comprehensive localization, green operation and digital operation and maintenance, which is a great power tool for deep oil and gas development and deep-earth scientific exploration.

Xie Zhengkai, a senior expert from the Science and Technology Management Department of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Zhang Fu, executive director and secretary of the Party Committee of Gem Machinery Company, the rig's development unit, Cao Xiaoyu, deputy general manager and chief engineer, and personnel from the Science and Technology Information Department and the National Research Center attended the conference.

The drilling rig is independently developed and produced by Gem Machinery with full intellectual property rights. The overall height of the drilling rig is 82 meters, equivalent to the height of a 24-story building, and the load lifting capacity is 900 tons, equivalent to lifting 150 adult elephants at the same time. The drilling rig is equipped with a full set of pipe column automation system, integrated control system for dual drillers, and one-button up and down drilling manipulation system, which reduces the labor intensity of the workers while significantly improving safety.
On March 4, 2024, the drilling depth of the rig has exceeded 10,000 meters, setting the record of the first deepest well in Asia.
