4054 Meters! “One Trip Drilling” in Tarim Basin Sets Record
Apr 29, 2024
On April 23, the Hade 293 well in the Tarim Oilfield, which was drilled by the XD80603 drilling team of the Bazhou Branch of China National Petroleum Corporation Western Drilling Engineering Co., Ltd., completed the second drilling operation and achieved "one-pass drilling" from 1,001 meters to 5,055 meters. , a single drill bit drilled 4,054 meters, and the pure drilling time was 215.5 hours, setting a new record for the highest footage completed by a single drill bit in the 311.2 mm wellbore in the Tarim Basin.

In the Tarim Basin, in the past, drilling from 1,000 meters to 5,000 meters required at least 3-5 drill bits to complete, but "drilling in one trip" can be done with just one drill bit.
Zhang Ming, chief of the Engineering Technology Section of the Bazhou Branch of Western Drilling, introduced that in recent years, supporting drill tool assemblies have been promoted to realize the "one-trip drilling" project. By optimizing drilling parameters, hydraulic jet rock breaking has been improved, and attacks have been optimized based on the drillability of the formation. High-efficiency drill bits with strong performance and wear resistance, carefully operated, and one drilling operation can be completed in one drilling operation.
"One-trip drilling" drilling technology reduces the usage of drill bits and tripping times for a single well, increases the drilling rate of drilling, shortens the drilling cycle, thereby reducing drilling costs.
In response to the "three highs and one excess" drilling problems of ultra-deep, ultra-high temperature, ultra-high pressure, and high sulfur content in the Tarim Basin, in recent years, the Bazhou Branch of Western Drilling has carried out rock mechanics analysis and judged from aspects such as well depth structure and speed-increasing tools. To determine the hardness of the reservoir rock, we jointly researched special drill bits with drill bit manufacturers, optimized drill bit designs and drilling fluid systems, and continuously promoted the application of "one-trip drilling" drilling technology to achieve optimal, fast and efficient drilling.
So far this year, Western Drilling has applied the "one-trip drilling" fast drilling speed-increasing technology to three wells in the Tarim Basin, increasing the average mechanical drilling speed by 20%.
