Hammer unions are heavy-duty, high-voltage flowline connectors. They are commonly found in chemical plants, offshore dredging vessels, open pit mines and the oil industry (depending on model, for mortar, oil, water, steam, etc.). Its color-coded system represents different configurations and pressure ratings, and it has a pressure range of 1,000-15,000 psi, depending on size and configuration.
Hammer union features a hermetic design where the conical and spherical surfaces of the male and female joints, respectively, form an effective metal-to-metal seal under low pressure service. For medium pressures, in addition to metal-to-metal seals, a "0" ring is primarily provided in the nipple. For high pressure, a lip seal ring is provided for the main seal in the female coupling. Seals protect secondary metal-to-metal seals from corrosion and limit fluid flow turbulence. For acid service applications, it offers Viton seals.
