The adjustable choke valve is an important part of the wellhead Christmas tree and choke manifold. It is commonly used in well control operations to reduce fluid pressure from high pressure in a closed wellbore to atmospheric pressure. It can be adjusted (open or closed) to closely control pressure drop. Adjustable throttles are constructed to resist wear when high velocity, solids-rich fluid flows through restrictive or sealing elements.
The adjustable choke valve is available in a variety of configurations for fixed and adjustable modes of operation. Adjustable throttle valves can vary fluid flow and pressure parameters to suit process or production requirements. In contrast, fixed throttle valves do not offer this flexibility, although they are more resistant to corrosion during extended operation or when producing abrasive slurries.
