China’s First Deep Shale Gas Well Cooling Test Successfully Implemented

On November 6, Well Yang 101H13-4 constructed by the 70235 team of Great Wall Drilling Company No. 2 was successfully drilled to 5920 meters. The deflection + horizontal section was drilled in one pass to 1930 meters, saving 15 days in the drilling cycle. Phase change material cooling technology was used in the construction of this well. The bottom hole circulation temperature has a significant downward trend and the rotary steering tool works stably. This marks the first important progress in the country's deep shale gas well cooling technology.

As deep shale gas exploration and development moves towards "deep blue", the high temperature at the bottom of the well has led to a high failure rate of rotary steering instruments, seriously affecting the construction progress. The Second Drilling Company and Party A "are one family, one mind, one energy, and work together" and made every effort to organize and carry out the cooling test. Conduct comprehensive equipment inspection and maintenance in advance, replace pressure-resistant and oil-resistant parts for the mud pump, and replace high-pressure flushing pipes for the top drive. During the drilling process, the three mud pumps were used alternately and inspected in time. Use short starting and lowering time to perform maintenance on the top drive and replace wearing parts. After entering the destination layer, on the premise of ensuring the proportion of new slurry in the drilling fluid and the use of solid control equipment, geological forecasts and elemental analysis are carried out, and density reduction operations are gradually implemented. While comprehensively increasing the mechanical penetration rate, it also provides the rotary guide facilities with Safe construction environment.

"During the on-site testing of new phase change material cooling technology, we arranged functional personnel and technical experts to provide guidance in the well to reduce construction risks and ensure the efficient implementation of technical measures and drilling parameters." said Huo Xiaojiang, captain (platform manager) of the 70235 team of the Second Drilling Company . The bottom hole circulating temperature in the later stage of construction of this well was 134°C, which was more than 8°C lower than that of other wells on the same platform. During the construction period, the rotary steering equipment did not have a single instrument failure caused by high temperature, and the drilling fluid performance was stable, meeting the requirements of deep shale gas water Flat well drilling requirements.
