Breaking The Record For The Deepest Geothermal Scientific Exploration Well in China, Well Fushenre 1 Was Drilled To 5,200 Meters

Apr 09, 2024

On April 8, the Fushenre 1 well deployed by Sinopec in Hainan was successfully drilled. The well reached a depth of 5,200 meters, setting a new record for the deepest geothermal scientific exploration well in China.
According to Sinopec, the successful drilling of Well Fushenre 1 revealed the formation and enrichment mechanism of deep geothermal in South China, which means that China has achieved new breakthroughs in hot dry rock exploration in terms of region and depth, and will contribute to the large-scale development of geothermal resources in South China. It is of great significance to utilize and assist the adjustment of regional energy structure.

The Paper (www.thepaper.cn) learned from Sinopec that the drilling target of Well Fushenre 1 is 250 million-year-old granite, which is a deep dry hot rock geothermal well. Since drilling started in August 2023, the well has applied a number of innovative technologies independently developed by Sinopec such as "dual drive drilling + high-pressure injection". The temperature exceeded 150°C at nearly 3,900 meters, reaching high-temperature geothermal standards; at a temperature of 5,000 meters It exceeds 180°C and reaches the hot dry rock temperature limit stipulated in the national energy industry standards. It has formed a key technology for deep geothermal resource detection and evaluation and achieved the expected goals and mission requirements of scientific exploration wells.
In the next step, Sinopec will carry out in-depth research and field tests based on Well Fushenre 1, build the first deep geothermal production-university-research integrated field test research platform and development and utilization demonstration platform in South China, and explore and form theoretical methods and methods suitable for South China. The technological system helps my country achieve its "double carbon" goal.
Geothermal energy is a stable, reliable, green and low-carbon renewable energy with the characteristics of large reserves, wide distribution, cleanness and environmental protection. At present, the development and utilization of geothermal resources in China is mainly based on shallow and medium-deep hydrothermal geothermal resources. However, the development of deep geothermal resources below 3,000 meters, especially hot dry rock resources, is still in the exploratory stage. Hot dry rock generally refers to high-temperature rock buried thousands of meters underground with a temperature greater than 180°C and containing no or only a small amount of fluid inside.
According to the China Geological Survey, the amount of hot dry rock geothermal resources between 3,000 meters and 10,000 meters underground in my country's land areas is equivalent to 856 trillion tons of standard coal. Even if only 2% is extracted, it can reach my country's annual energy consumption in 2023. 2993 times the amount.
